Obama’s Chance To Forever Shut His Conservative Critics Up. Or Prove them Right

1185858_523368967736684_2071115443_n

Obama has asked Congress to vote on whether or not we attack Syria with cruise missiles. Congress, particularly the GOP must wetting themselves. The warhawks very much want to attack because they LOVE any excuse to blow up people in other countries. But it’s veeeeeery unpopular. The “I oppose everything Obama says” will want to say no simply because Obama wants to. Some others will say no because they actually want to stay out of the Middle East.

There are four ways this could go:

  1.  Congress votes “yes” and we attack. Well, The GOP will not be able to attack Obama because Republicans would have had to vote yes in the first place.
  2. Congress votes “no” and we don’t attack. Now they can’t attack Obama as soft on terror or whatever because Republicans would have had to have voted against it.
  3. Congress votes “yes” and we don’t attack. Yeah, right.
  4. Congress votes “no” and Obama decides to attack anyway. This is the only scenario that will help Republicans and is very unlikely. It would, however, bolster their talking points that Obama is a dictator that ignores the Constitution. Which is why he wouldn’t do it.

There’s almost no good outcome for the GOP here and that’s why, I think, is part of the reason Obama is demanding that Congress do its job for a change.

By the way, the title of this post is a total lie. There is literally nothing Obama could do to shut his critics up. He could save the reincarnation of Jesus from a pack Islamic fundamentalist suicide bombers using an AR15 painted with the American flag while french kissing Ronald Reagan’s corpse and singing Ted Nugent’s greatest hits and they would complain about the shoes he was wearing. Oh well.

Fox And Friends Wants Women And Their High Maintenance Lady Parts To Stop Stealing From Men

Riiiiight. The right has no problem whatsoever with women.

“Look, it’s not bias, I’m not saying this as a man,” Fox News Medical A-Team contributor Dr. David Samadi told the hosts of Fox & Friends. “They go through a lot of preventive screenings, they give birth, they have the whole mammogram, the Pap smear. Guys, we don’t like to go to doctors, right? Seventy percent of health care decisions are made by women. In my own practice, I see it’s the women who bring the guys, who say, go get screened.”

“Yeah, but shouldn’t that earn us a discount?” Fox News host Gretchen Carlson interrupted. “Basic fact that we are responsible for getting our men to come to the doctor? And what about the fact that women, because they do all this preventative care, maybe their health issues end up costing less than men’s, who don’t go to the doctor until it’s a crisis and a big deal.”

“Yes, that’s a good point, except that, you know, women live longer,” Samadi asserted. “Women live until age 81 and men live only until 76. So, we’re using the health care system much less.”

“Women’s greater attentiveness to their own health likely also contributes to their longevity,” she wrote. “After all, women may reap the benefits of this behavior by living longer lives; they should also take on the costs.”

You damn niggers poor people Mexicans women! Stop trying to steal money from decent hard working Whites job creators REAL Americans men!

The groups change but the narrative is ALWAYS the same: I got mine. Screw you.

George Zimmerman Is Quietly Becoming A Right Wing Icon

Poor Joe Scarborough. He can see the inevitable and he knows it’s bad news:

George Zimmerman’s recent visit to a gun factory had Republican MSNBC host Joe Scarborough concerned on Monday about him being taken in by his party.

“This is not a man that Republicans should embrace as a hero,” Scarborough said of Zimmerman, who was found not guilty of murder in July 2013 in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. “He is anything but a hero.”

Scarborough told his panelists that members of the far right would be tempted to align themselves with Zimmerman, who was criticized by his own lawyers after photos surfaced of him visiting the factory that made the gun he used to shoot and kill Martin.

Of COURSE the right is going to idolize Zimmerman. He shot himself a Negro and got away with it! Even better, he wasn’t defending himself in a home invasion or from a mugging, he took the fight to that no good thug, Trayvon, and got’er dun! It’s the dream of all right wing racists to defend White America by gunning down a vicious (black) animal and have the courts legitimize it. That liberals and black people are disgusted is the icing on the cake.

Oh? That’s bullshit? Allow me to introduce you to The Birth of a Nation, an extremely influential film on the psyche of right wing America:

Yes, that’s the KKK riding to the rescue of a white town under siege by black soldiers looking to rape and pillage. If you don’t think this is a deeply held dream of racists on the right, you haven’t been paying attention for the last 150 years.

When Libertarian Fantasies Meet Reality, The Results Are Always Ugly

I never get tired of popping the bubble of utter delusion that is libertarian economic theory. The rationale for less regulation and oversight is “The free market will punish corporations that misbehave!” This, of course, is the single most ignorant statement about corporations one could make next to “Corporations are people, my friend.”

Corporations USED to be accountable to the public because because their charter could be revoked if they went off the rails. They also only existed for a specified purpose and once it was fulfilled, the charter would end and the corporation would disband. However, corporations in their modern incarnation are immortal. Their charter can be revoked but good luck with that. Further, they exist for the sole purpose of making money. Period. That’s it. Nothing else. Ethics and morality do not play a part in their decisions. Why? Because it’s rare for the people who decided that poisoning children for a profit will ever go to jail. It wasn’t their fault, you see. They were just doing their job! Once personal responsibility is removed from the equation it becomes incredibly easy for corporate executives to do stuff like the following:

A drug company refuses to sell lifesaving drugs because the profit margin is only healthy instead of obscene:

When South Korea’s Ministry of Health, Welfare and Family Affairs valued a year’s supply of Fuzeon at $18,000 — essentially setting the limit Roche could charge for the drug within the country’s borders — Roche balked and refused to sell the drug there any longer. Because of the lack of alternative drugs, the company effectively withdrew treatment for South Korea’s HIV patients, despite the fact that the company still would’ve realized a profit from sales, even at the $18,000 price limit.

When the decision was challenged, the head of Roche’s Korea division reportedly said, “We are not in the business to save lives, but to make money. Saving lives is not our business”

Saving lives is not our business. Nice. Or how about price gouging the military and then knowingly delivering spoiled food to the troops?

Halliburton employees revealed the company’s policy of delivering spoiled and out-of-date food to U.S. troops stationed in Iraq. In some cases, the food was spoiled enough that it would be refused at camp. In this case, said Halliburton delivery drivers, the food would be taken to the next camp until it was accepted

Libertarians HATE Obamacare! Apparently they would prefer this:

Under WellPoint’s policy, a breast cancer diagnosis meant a woman’s policy was flagged for investigation. It would be searched for any type of error, including clerical errors, which would then be used to revoke the patient’s insurance coverage

This practice is now illegal but it went on for decades. Where was the invisible hand of the free market? And speaking of the “free market” there was this gem from Wall St.:

So investment banking house Goldman Sachs created Abacus 2007-ACI, a fund of mortgages it sold to investors. What Goldman didn’t tell Abacus fund investors was that the mortgages they were betting would succeed had been handpicked by a favorite Goldman investor to actually lose. The favored investor, John Paulson, was allowed to compile the mortgage-backed securities (meaning subprime) that he thought would lose so he could bet against them. It was up to Goldman to sell the fund to investors who would bet on them [source: Nocera]. Paulson won the bet, making $1 billon from the fund.

Libertarians love the idea of caveat emptor or “Let the buyer beware.” If the seller cheats you, that’s too bad but supposedly, the bad guys will be punished somehow. But time after time, no one goes to jail. No one gets into any real trouble and if the banks had not choked on their own greed in such a public faction, no one would have even known about this particular scam. The rich get to prey on the less rich at will because that’s how they designed the system. Without the government regulation and watchdogging that libertarians cry about so often, there’s nothing stopping the rich from cheating us, stealing our money or even flat out killing us for a profit. They already do this and there are laws against it and the nominal threat of jail.

What kind of idiot thinks that they would suddenly stop all of their disgusting, inhumane and sociopathic behavior if they DIDN’T have the government watching them? Keep preaching about the free market and the use of force to “steal” taxes you jackasses. The rich love you for your hard work ensuring they can profit from your misery later. They rest of us will pool our resources and have our government look out for our best interests. You can go live in Somalia. Let us know how awesome your freedom is.

Right Wing Whack-A-Mole: Why You Cannot Change A Wingnut’s Mind

So I had a troll named Simeon on my Proud To Be A Filthy Liberal Scum FB page. He presented himself as a “reasonable moderate” that nonetheless was convinced that Obama had done something wrong on 9/11 of last year when Ambassador Stevens was killed in Libya. He couldn’t quite say what Obama had done, just that he was guilty of something and blablabla. I’m sure you’ve heard it before from one tinfoil hat wearing doofus or another.

I went ahead and dissected his narrative in excruciating detail even as he constantly moved the goalpost until he finally ran out of excuses and gave up. Yes, I wore a troll down until he surrendered. It took a few weeks but he abandoned his Benghazi conspiracy and tried to complain about other topics. Eventually, I challenged him to show me that he was really as “nonpartisan” as he claimed and prove that he was just as critical of right wing policies that he disagreed with. Unsurprisingly, he couldn’t and the thread petered out. It’s hard to criticize others for being blindly partisan when you, yourself, have been exposed as the same.

A few weeks later, he popped up on my personal FB page and, lo and behold, he was an “independent” that just so happened to never question a single conservative policy but was deeply “concerned” about everything liberal. That didn’t last long and I banned him after a few weeks of him moving the goalposts every time he was debunked. Again.

And then, just a few days ago, he popped up yet again on another page I’m a co-admin for, Angry Liberal Bitch. Now, we spent weeks shredding his Benghazi conspiracies and he admitted that he couldn’t substantiate any of it. He also conceded that several of his beliefs were wrong in the face of the extremely solid evidence to the contrary. Yet, there he was spinning the exact same narrative as if he hadn’t just spent weeks being comprehensively proved wrong. When I confronted him, he simply claimed he didn’t remember.

This is the core of the right wing movement: You cannot prove them wrong because they don’t care. Even when you do and they admit it, they will simply go somewhere else and tell the very same story they just admitted was false. The truth is completely irrelevant, the only thing that matters is spreading right wing propaganda. Simeon knows, for a fact, that his Bengahzi narrative is completely wrong. He knows how it is wrong and how to confirm that it is wrong. But so what? He’ll be on another page in a week or so, if he isn’t already, repeating what he knows, for a fact, to be false information all while pretending to be a “concerned” nonpartisan.

People complain to me all the time that I am too dismissive of conservatives and that I should try harder to reach out to them. Why should I waste my time? Simeon is not the first right winger I’ve seen do this although he is the most blatant about it. It’s time for liberals and moderates and actual independents to acknowledge that the right cannot be swayed by reason. Some are detached from reality, some are too prideful or fearful to admit error and still others are perfectly aware they are lying through their teeth and just don’t give a damn.

The only rational course left is something I’ve been advocating for a long time: Marginalize those on the right that will not traffic in the real. Hold them up for the world to see and ridicule them. Make it as clear as possible to those who haven’t taken the time to notice that these people spout pure hate and insanity. If you engage them on their terms, all you do it give them the credibility they are absolutely not entitled to.

GOP Whining: Curse Those Damn Food Stamp Cheats!

Can you spot the flaw in this idiot’s reasoning?

So I’m in Crystal City and I’m buying my groceries…and I noticed everybody was giving that card. They had these huge baskets, and I realized it was the first of the month. But then I’m looking over, and there’s a couple beside me. This guy was built like a brick house. I mean he had muscles all over him. He was in a little tank top and pair of shorts and really nice Nike shoes. And she was standing there, and she was all in shape and she looked like she had just come from a fitness program. She was in the spandex, and you know, they were both physically fit. And they go up in front of me and they pay with that card. Fraud. Absolute 100% all it is is fraud…it’s all over the place. And there you go, to the fact that we shouldn’t be supporting those who won’t work. They’re spending their money someplace.

That was Rep. Markwayne Mullin. Now guess what party he’s in. Ah, you don’t need to, he’s a Republican of course. Who else would be so stupid to assume that people in excellent physical condition are unemployed on purpose? I know several construction workers that were out of work when the recession hit hardest. Those lazy slobs! Maybe he was a gym teacher that was laid off because of the Sequester. Maybe he just keeps in shape because he prefers to exercise while job searching instead of sitting at home on the couch. The idea that the poor have to be sickly and fragile exists solely for the purpose of attacking social programs. If you CAN work but are on unemployment, that must mean you are lazy. Never mind that there still aren’t enough jobs to fill the demand, cut food stamps and force those lazy niggers poor people to get jobs!

BTW, it was a nice touch that he mentioned the “really nice Nike shoes.” Nothing like blowing that racist dog whistle for the right wing base. Oh? I’m making that up? Really? Feel free to convince me that any republican would ever bother to comment on a white person’s Nikes.

Good luck with that.

I wonder when Rep. Mullins will show the same kind of outrage at the Wall St. criminality and fraud that cost Americans trillions of dollars? Food stamp fraud costs the taxpayers a tiny fraction of the money that the banksters pissed away but hey, let’s make the poor suffer for a few bad eggs instead of policing the rich and powerful for systemic corruption.

Politico Trolls The World

What else could you possibly call it when this supposedly “neutral” political website allows a White Supremacist to write for them as an “opinion contributor?”

Jason Richwine is the piece of shit that the right wing Heritage Foundation turned to when they needed “statistics” to “prove” that immigration reform would be economically terrible for the country. If you’ll recall, he stated that Hispanics just weren’t as smart as White people and might never be so they were guaranteed to be a drain for generations to come. The Heritage Foundation fired him but tried to keep is “data” in their reports. They were pretty much laughed out of the room.

But that hasn’t stopped Politico from letting Richwine air his bullshit anyway.

Personally, I avoid Politico. They live and report from inside the the Beltway Bubble so they’re not exactly in step with the real world. That they would allow a openly racist scumbag on their “news” site does not speak to their credibility in the least. And, no, hearing all sides of the argument is not a defense.

Moving To The Madhouse That Is Virginia

2522519-watchman_Some of you have voiced your concern for my safety now that I will surrounded by right wing lunatics when I move to Virginia. After all, Virginia is a battleground state. The House is firmly in the GOP’s control, the Senate is split down the middle, the current governor is a right wing religious fanatic and his potential replacement is even more insane.

But, in the immortal words of Rorschach from Watchmen:

How To Be Greedy And F**k Yourself In One Simple Step

Sit down my flock of filthy liberal scum and let ol’ Filthy here spin you a story. A story about greed and stupidity and how one company appears to have committed suicide.

Once upon a time there was a company named Game Stop (this is not the suicidal company in question) and they sold video games. They also sold used video games. Then, one day, some bright bulb at the home office realized just how much of a demand there was for those used games and they vastly expanded the market.

The video game companies like Sony and Microsoft did not like this. So they sued. Repeatedly.

They lost every time.

After several failed attempts to make Game Stop stop selling used games, it looked like Sony and Microsoft had given up. Especially in light of the fact that the used game market had expanded beyond Game Stop to other major video game retailers like Best Buy and Walmart.

But Microsoft had a plan!

When they released their next generation system, they would design it so games could ONLY be played on that system unless the customer paid Microsoft a fee to play it on another system. No more borrowing a friend’s game. No more playing your game over a friend’s house. Certainly no more of this buying a used game without Microsoft making a profit.

All seemed lost for the used game market.

But then Sony announced its next gen system and, having decided NOT to be greedy pricks, realized what a tremendous error Microsoft had made. If customers have a choice between freedom and greed, they’re going to go with freedom. Specifically, the freedom to buy and sell used games without Microsoft demanding a cut of the action. And so Sony has made quite a lot of noise about how you can still play used games or lend them to a friend on the Playstation 4.

If Microsoft does not rescind its scheme to profit from second hand games, it doesn’t take an economics degree to see that market will severely punish them for this. Why Microsoft did not sign a legal agreement with Sony beforehand so both would roll out this new “feature” at the same time is a mystery but it’s clear that they will suffer for it.

And as much as I love my Xbox, good. Fuck them and their greed. The very idea of a company telling me what to do with my game after I fork over $60 for it makes me want to puke. It’s mine. I can sell it, lend it or give it away and screw anybody that tries to tell me otherwise.

I hope Microsoft gets destroyed this round of the console wars. I hope they get their asses kicked so hard that Nintendo takes second place with its stupid Wii U. I hope they fail so badly that they finally remember that the players make the system; something they seem to have forgotten.

Maybe I’ll be able to play Halo 6 on my PS4…

China Beats Us To The Future Sci-Fi Promised Us

Goddamn it and goddamn Republicans and their bullshit for stripping away the innovation and risk taking that used to be the hallmark of American strength.

As cities get more congested and spread outwards, their impact on the environment is ruinous. Mass transit can barely keep up and road traffic becomes nightmarish along with all of its fossil fuel consumption. One solution to this problem?

Build up, not out.

China has actually started construction on this behemoth while we’re busy letting our roads and bridges crumble because the GOP doesn’t want infrastructure spending to boost the economy.

Broad Sustainable Construction informs us that a long and arduous approval process has been completed, and that they are starting excavation and construction on Sky CIty in June, 2013.

Why build the world’s tallest building in the middle of a field in Changsha, China? Why build it at all? The answer, according to BSC, is that it is the most sustainable way to accommodate a growing population.

The numbers continue to stagger. In one building, there will be accommodation for 4450 families in apartments ranging from 645 SF to 5,000 SF, 250 hotel rooms, 100,000 SF of school, hospital and office space, totalling over eleven million square feet. The building footprint is only 10% of the site; the rest is open parkland.

There’s more: The building is designed to be earthquake resistant to Magnitude 9, and to a 3 hour fire resistance rating, provided by ceramics installed around the structure. 16,000 part time and 3,000 full time workers will prefabricate the building for four months and assemble on site in three months. The Broad system is based on prefabricated floor panels that ship with everything need to go 3D packed along with it, so they are not shipping a lot of air. It all just bolts together. BSC claims that by building this way, they eliminate construction waste, lost time managing trades, keep tight cost control and can build at a cost 50% to 60% less than conventional construction.

If you build five of these in a two square mile area, you have the entire population of Salt Lake City living comfortably in one fiftieth of the space. And no smog. Although it would make it easier for the Mormons to knock on your door and annoy you.

The Sky City is 838 meters. By way of comparison, the new World Trade Center is 541 meters. Sky City is almost 3 full football field lengths taller.

I imagine tech companies (among others) would be VERY interested in this idea. You can have all of your employees and their families right there. Mom and dad could zip off during lunch to see the kids, thus relieving a good deal of the stress on family life. People would be much more loyal to the company lest they have to move to what amounts to a completely different city for a new job.

Would the benefits outweigh the negatives? I guess we’ll find out. Too bad we had to wait for another country to screw up the courage to try it. The country of boldness is rapidly being reduced to a sad has-been by right wing fear and timidity. No wonder all the good sci-fi shows paint a future ruled by Asian culture…
